Arizona Wildcats name their starter
One of the biggest questions the Wildcats faced this offseason was who their starting quarterback would be come August 29th. Well the team laid that question to rest on Monday naming their starter.
Anu Solomon will be the teams starter come Friday. According to Arizona’s head coach however, he is by no means a lock to stay that way.
“That doesn’t mean that he plays the whole game and that he will be the starter the rest of the season, but I also don’t want any quarterback to ever go in thinking as soon as I make a mistake I’m coming out,” the coach said. “That’s not going to be the case either but thought he deserved the right to start the first game.”
Solomon comes from Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas. Solomon was a four star recruit, and the 99th ranked player on Rivals.com top 100. He was the seventh quarterback on their list, and the top player to come out of Nevada. His senior year he threw for 2800 yards and 37 touchdowns. He ended his high school career with 141 touchdowns to 18 interceptions, and a completion percentage of 63%.
Anu beat out senior Jesse Scroggins, junior Jerrard Randall, and sophomore Connor Brewer, who is an Arizona native.
Anu will be the fourth starting quarterback in four years, and the teams first freshman quarterback since joining the PAC conference in 1978.
Coach Rich Rodriguez has all the confidence in his young signal caller;
“I’m confident that Anu will play well and he will be the starter as long as he plays well and we win,” Rodriguez added. “The coaches, and myself particularly, felt that he was playing the best out of all four quarterbacks. I think he’s got a good feel for the game and I want to make it clear it’s not like he did this thing and these other guys didn’t. I think he did more things better on a consistent basis for him to start.”
Solomon will get his first live game this weekend against the UNLV Rebels at 7:30 on ESPN.
