Coyotes GM Maloney to reach out to Viktor Tikhonov about Coyotes return
With the 28th overall pick of the 2008 NHL Draft, the Phoenix Coyotes selected Viktor Tikhonov. Tikhonov turned out to be one of the biggest busts in the teams’ short history. He spent only one season with the Coyotes before being sent to the AHL to play for the San Antonio Rampage the following season.
Tokhonov never made it back into the majors, at least not in the NHL. He now plays his club hockey for SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL. The 26-year old is currently in action for Russia in the World Hockey Championship in Belarus where he’s lighting it up and is the competitions leading goalscorer.
Coyotes head coach Dave Tippett is currently in Belarus coaching Team Canada. Tikhonov’s performances have impressed him enough to alert Coyotes management about a possible return to the team. Coyotes general manager Don Maloney has already reached out to Tikhonov’s agent about a return to the team.
Maloney has also reached out to Viktor Tikhonov’s agent to see if he has interest in returning to NHL.

Tohonov played 61 games for the Coyotes between 2008 and 2009 scoring eight goals and eight assists.and racking up only 16 points. This dismal performance meant that Tikhonov would spend the next three years with the Rampage in the AHL. He also played a year for the Severstal Cherepovets in the KHL, the team the Coyotes originally drafted him from, before joining the St. Petersburg outfit.
Tikhonov has 18 goals, 16 assists and 34 points for SKA St. Petersburg in the 2013-14 season. He has seven goals and 14 points in seven games played for Russia in the WHC.
Viktor Tikhonov is named after his grandfather of the same name, the legendary Russian coach who coached the Soviet Union when they were the most dominant team in the world between 1978 and 1990.
