According to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times, Angels slugger Albert Pujols had some extremely positive words to say about Yankees’ shortstop Derek Jeter:

This is a comparison that Yankees fans (myself included) have been making for years. He’s a great player that never gives up and always plays the game the proverbial ‘right way’. He’s never been linked to steroids or off the field controversy, and he runs out every ball, no matter how obvious it is that he’s going to be out.  He’s the player that every one of my Little League coaches told me to play like.

Jeter has been one of the best players in the history of one of the best franchises in the history of professional sports. He’ll be hanging up the cleats for good after this season, as he announced his plans for retirement via his Facebook page yesterday.

Here is the letter that Jeter left for his fans on his official Facebook page yesterday

We’re going to be getting lots of quotes like this over the course of the next several months. We’re also going to see a repeat of the types of send offs that Mariano Rivera got in 2013 with teams giving Jeter lots of praise and likely gifts on his farewell tour of the majors.

I’m glad that Jeter announced his retirement before the season and didn’t risk getting hurt again and making it seem like the injury was the only thing influencing his decision. Here’s to hoping that he stays healthy and gets to run off the field after his last game and doesn’t have to be helped off.
