Baltimore Orioles budding superstar 3B Manny Machado has decided that surgery is the better long term option for knee repair, rather than rest.  According to Baltimore Orioles beat writer Brittany Ghiroli, Machado should return in four to six months (which could be just before spring training, or into the first month of the season, depending on how recovery goes).

The 21-year old left a game on September 23rd with a gruesome knee injury that seemed to be the result of nothing more than an awkward step near first base.  Even with missing the last few games of the year, Machado led the American League in at bats (667) and doubles (51).  The injury occurred right at the time the Orioles were seriously fading in the AL Wild Card race, one they finished 6 games behind the field.

You have to see where the kid is coming from, at his age, better to fix the situation now, rather than let it linger.  According to a team release (via Ghiroli), Machado seemed comfortable with the decision:

“I sent my MRI results to a couple of doctors and knee specialists and we decided that in the long run and for my future as a baseball player, this surgery would be the best plan.  I will immediately begin the rehabilitation process in hopes of being ready for the start of Spring Training.”

The surgery will be reconstruction on the medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL).  If you really want to know how it works, watch this cool video:

After watching that, I’m pretty sure I could do the surgery myself. That, or I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
