Barry Bonds to Present McCutchen’s MVP Award
According to Pirates.com, the trophy for Andrew McCutchen’s 2013 National League Most Valuable Player Award will be presented by Barry Bonds and Dick Groat who have both previously won NL MVPs with the Pirates.
Bonds has been a polarizing force in baseball because of his link to performance enhancing drugs, but fans in Pittsburgh still remember his glory days as a Pirate when he was just a speedy outfielder with a great bat and disdain for the media.
Bonds and Groat are not the only Pirates’ greats to return to present awards to current players. Monday will be a star-studded afternoon on Pittsburgh’s North Shore at beautiful PNC Park.
Former Pirates manager Jim Leyland will be on hand to present current manager Clint Hurdle with the National League Manager of the Year Award. Leyland won the same award twice during his tenure as the Buccos’ skipper.
That’s not all! Jack Wilson will be presenting Pedro Alvarez and Andrew McCutchen with Louisville Silver Slugger Awards.
The Pirates had their first winning season and Postseason berth in 20 years last year. It’s no surprise that their players and manager received so much recognition.
The Pirates look to build on last season’s success when they open up the 2014 season against the Chicago Cubs. They’re hoping ‘BUCtober’ was not a fluke.
