WATCH: Carlos Gomez crashes into wall making catch, leaves with injury

  • David Whitlock

If there was a signature defensive play in the 2013 MLB season, it would be Milwaukee Brewers All-Star CF Carlos Gomez running full speed to the warning track, crashing into the wall, giving up his body, and always making the catch.  The theme repeated itself Thursday night, as Gomez made a twisting catch and crashed full speed into the wall at Miller Park in Milwaukee.  The play robbed Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips of extra bases (courtesy of MLB.com):

Initial prognosis on the injury is sprained knee, no serious damage, MRI on Friday.

And if you don’t believe me, here are some other ridiculous Gomez catches:

Gomez robs Joey Votto of game winning home run
Gomez robs Marlon Byrd of home run
Gomez robs Andrelton Simmons of extra bases (leaves with injury)

All this on a team that’s almost 20 games under .500 and going nowhere.  Talk about an effort guy.  Can we just award the Gold Glove now, or do we have to actually wait for the season to end?

David Whitlock - manager

David (a.k.a. Longhorndave or lhd_on_sports) joined the staff late in the 2012 season and moved to Site Manager in early 2013. A lifelong Houston Astros fan (and mini-season ticket holder for 9 years) he attends 20+ games per year. A statistics freak, David still keeps score the "old fashioned way" on occasion (and has kept manual score of World Series games since 1986 and retains the sheets). He was a featured guest weekly on the Phil Naessens Show. He is also a Texas Longhorns alumnus and huge football and baseball fan of his alma mater. When he isn't watching or writing about baseball, he works as a contractor at NASA Johnson Space Center. He lives by the mantra "a bad day at the ballpark is better than a good day anywhere else."
