Brick by brick, Texas Rangers rebuilding rotation
The Texas Rangers are set in reinserting Alexi Ogando into the starting rotation for 2013, after using him as a bullpen weapon in 2012. Texas seemed to have plenty of arms going into 2012, but with some injuries to Neftali Feliz (won’t be ready by 2013 opening day) and some ineffectiveness by arms that had been consistent in the two World Series seasons, their team ERA found itself on the north side of 4.00 (2012 ERA: 4.02) for the first time since the pre-World Series season of 2009. With Yu Darvish (16W, 10.4 K/9), Derek Holland (if he can stay consistent), and Matt Harrison (18 wins, 3.29 ERA) as anchors, Ogando as a middle-to-back end rotation guy, the stage may be set to acquire Zack Greinke (the prize of the 2013 FA class) or a middle rotation starter such as Lohse or Peavy and they’ll compete day in day out. And Dan Haren just hit the market, as well (wouldn’t they love to have him to battle the Angels). Nolan Ryan isn’t going to battle without weapons in his rotation, he’s proven it can work in Texas, and this is a good step to solidify that in 2012.
