Some interesting news crossed the wire today, in that Buster Posey, the best catcher in baseball and 2012 NL MVP could eventually move to the hot corner. This comes according to Manager Bruce Bochy:
I think he’d be a really good third baseman. We like him where he’s at now, and this is something [that would happen] if he took the time to learn it in the offseason and spring training. But he’s an athlete and he has the hands and the arm.
This would have some notable implications. For one, it would send a message that the catching position is not a long-term fit for any great hitter. Also, would this mean that current Giant’s third sacker Pablo Sandoval would move to 1B? If so that puts Brandon Belt out of a job. Maybe that’s the point. Finally, it would have some interesting ramifications for fantasy baseball, as a catcher-eligible third basemen (less days offs and reduced injury risk) would boost Posey’s value even further. Of course, after losing position eligibility behind the plate, that value would plummet.
