Elvis Andrus deal with Texas Rangers officially announced, Jurickson Profar to 2B?

Rangers SaturdayThe Texas Rangers officially announced the signing of their current and future SS Elvis Andrus to an 8-year, $120M deal, setting up their middle infield to be one of the strongest in the American League for half a decade or more.  The number one major league baseball prospect Jurickson Profar also plays SS, but would be a likely candidate to slide over to 2B.  With Andrus at age 24, and Profar at 20, this could be an extremely productive tandem for years to come.  The Rangers would have player control over Profar for six years when he comes up, meaning he couldn’t turn to free agency until 2019 at the earliest.

There are some nuances for out clauses in the Andrus deal.  He is now signed at least through 2018 (six more seasons), but he can become a free agent then, or after 2019 should he choose.  If he doesn’t exercise, he stays with the Texas Rangers through 2022.Texas Rangers General Manager Jon Daniels hailed the deal as good for the team and Andrus:

“It’s an unusual deal that works for both sides…we understand he wants to keep the right to be a free agent before he’s 30. The point is he wants to be here, we want him to be here and this is what both sides are willing to do.”

Credit to the Rangers for balancing free agents and prospects.  They’ve never given up too much to get that key player down the stretch, they bring in talent that produces at reasonable prices, and they know when to let a Josh Hamilton go when it is time.  It sure seems the Rangers ownership and Jon Daniels are on the same page, and it shows.
