Independent League Long Island Ducks eye signing of Alex Rodriguez

In what has been a whirlwind 36 hours since the announcement of at least 162 games of Alex Rodriguez’s suspension being upheld, writers and pundit are playing out future scenarios of “what will A-Rod do next”.  Will he be in Spring Training? Will he get an injunction? The Long Island Ducks of the Independent Atlantic League might welcome him with open arms.  The two-time defending Atlantic League Champions.  Mark Herrmann of Long Island NewsDay reports that the invitation is open for him to appear:

“While some MLB suspensions have been honored by the Atlantic League in the past, if Alex Rodriguez were unable to participate in the major leagues this season, we would be open to exploring giving him a chance to play, stay sharp and compete against a high level of competition while helping the Ducks chase a third consecutive championship,” Ducks president Michael Pfaff said Saturday in an email.

The Yankees would also have to bless the deal, which would be highly unlikely.  As it stands now, the Yankees get this one year of salary relief, but then owe him lots and lots of cash (like $61M) in three more out years.  For whatever talent he has left, they wouldn’t want him standing in the box against Independent League pitchers who know they might get on Sportscenter mowing him down (like Ryan Dempster did).

Lest we forget, the Ducks once employed Jose Canseco, so you know the carnival is in full effect.  It is just a 46 mile, one hour drive from Yankee Stadium!

David (a.k.a. Longhorndave or lhd_on_sports) joined the staff late in the 2012 season and moved to Site Manager in early 2013. A lifelong Houston Astros fan (and mini-season ticket holder for 9 years) he attends 20+ games per year. A statistics freak, David still keeps score the "old fashioned way" on occasion (and has kept manual score of World Series games since 1986 and retains the sheets). He was a featured guest weekly on the Phil Naessens Show. He is also a Texas Longhorns alumnus and huge football and baseball fan of his alma mater. When he isn't watching or writing about baseball, he works as a contractor at NASA Johnson Space Center. He lives by the mantra "a bad day at the ballpark is better than a good day anywhere else."
