Jonny Venters the latest reliever to suffer elbow injury
Just a few days after St. Louis Cardinals’ Jason Motte suffered a forearm/elbow injury resulting in a start on the DL, another team expected to contend for the postseason suffers a bad blow. Atlanta Braves All Star set-up man Jonny Venters left today’s game vs. Detroit in Lakeland, Florida. Venters was struggling in the outing, allowing 2 hits and 2 walks while retiring only one. Venters has exhibited closers stuff with an ERA under 2.00 in 2010 and 2011, but was behind extremely effective firemen Billy Wagner and Craig Kimbrel. Venters seemed a little bit off in 2012 scuffling to a 4.24 ERA in the first half of the season, but regaining form down the stretch with a 1.71 ERA, just when the team needed it to make the Wild Card. His durability has come into question, as he averaged about an appearance every other game for the 2010-11 seasons, but those issues seemed to be behind him in the second half. However, alarms are raised, as he was already shelved for 10 days this Spring with arm discomfort.
Not having a healthy Venters for the long haul would be a significant blow to the Braves NL East chances, with the defending Division champ Washington Nationals, and always-strong Philadelphia Phillies lurking.
