The Texas Rangers have proven themselves to be a top-notch organization that is willing to make moves and spend money to seriously compete for a World Series championship. The Rangers have loaded their MLB squad with an extremely athletic lineup to go along with a pitching staff with multiple power arms. The off-season signing of Yu Darvish has proved that the Texas Rangers organization isn’t satisfied with back-to-back World Series appearances. This organization wants a World Series championship. Therefore, as Buster Olney notes, a trade for Arizona Diamondbacks’ Justin Upton makes plenty of sense. Rangers manager Ron Washington has enjoyed taking full advantage of his athletic squad, as he lets his players show their talents on the field and holds nothing back. Justin Upton is a bona fide five tool player, and in Washington’s system, his talents will continue to flourish. Upton’s combination of speed, power and defense would fit in quite well with this Texas powerhouse squad. Furthermore, it looks like the Rangers have the potential star power to make this deal happen.
The Rangers have a serious prospect in their organization. Third baseman Mike Olt has spent the entire 2012 season with the Rangers’ Double-A affiliate Frisco RoughRiders. Olt has put up some serious numbers and is raising eyebrows as one of the up and coming future MLB stars. This season, Olt is batting .292 with 22 home runs and 63 RBI. Olt’s talents have been recognized, as he recently played in Sunday’s Futures Game at Kauffman Stadium as part of the MLB’s All-Star festivities. Unfortunately for Olt, there is one significant problem for him in the Texas organization. Olt’s problem is Adrian Beltre. Olt is a third baseman, and Adrian Beltre is perhaps the best third baseman in the game. Therefore, Olt is expendable and makes for a great trade commodity for the Rangers.
The Arizona Diamondbacks need a third baseman, and Justin Upton would fit nicely in the Rangers’ outfield. This is not to say that the Rangers are in any dire need at any of the three outfield positions, but Upton is just the type of versatile athlete that will fit in anywhere. Furthermore, it is no secret that the Rangers’ superstar outfielder Josh Hamilton is up for free agency at the end of the season. Justin Upton would give the Rangers the added future security just in case they are not able to re-sign Hamilton. Obviously, the Rangers would love to have Hamilton on their squad for years to come, but it’s unknown what the off-season dealings will bring.
Don’t be surprised if this deal goes down later this month. One thing’s for sure…No other American League team wants to see this happen.
As the Rangers explore ways to improve, here’s one that makes a lot of sense: A trade for Justin Upton. Ariz. looking for 3B, and Olt fits.
