Lance Berkman close to signing with Texas Rangers

  • David Whitlock

While it is widely believed he wanted to resign with the Houston Astros, budget issues seemed to have reached and impasse, and Lance will apparently sign with the next closest team geographically, the Texas Rangers.  According to a @Ken_Rosenthal Tweet:

@Ken_Rosenthal Sources: #Rangers finalizing agreement with Berkman. Deal expected to be one year. Vesting option possible.

It seemed in recent weeks that Berkman was more and more leaning toward playing, instead of coaching at Rice University as he had stated was his backup plan.  But what will the Rangers get? The 2011 Berkman that was a significant reason they fell short of their first World Title?  Or the 2012 version that limped through 32 games (while pocketing $12M, thank you very much).  The move makes sense in that the Rangers need a 1B/DH type and a middle of the lineup type.  If they can get 120 games out of him and some semblence of his prime, not a bad consolation prize, having lost a number of other key free agent targets.

Oh, and let’s not forget who and where the Rangers play on Opening Day.  Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas.
