Lloyd McClendon to be named manager of the Seattle Mariners

The Seattle Mariners have settled on Lloyd McClendon as their next manager.  According to Greg Johns of MLB.com, sources within MLB have confirmed that McClendon will be named, though the franchise has not confirmed.

The Mariners have made no official announcement yet, but a Major League source confirmed the report, which was initially tweeted by the Puget Sound Business Journal. The club is expected to finalize the deal either late Tuesday or Wednesday.

And here’s that Tweet:

The information was later confirmed by the @Mariners official Twitter Account

According to MLB.com, McClendon was the only candidate with major league experience, having led the woeful Pittsburgh Pirates from 2001 – 2005.

The other Mariners finalists were A’s bench coach Chip Hale, Padres bench coach Rick Renteria, former Mariners second baseman and longtime White Sox bench coach Joey Cora and Dodgers third-base coach Tim Wallach.

McClendon went 336 – 446 in his 4+ seasons as manager, as the Swashbucklers never gained traction in the youth movement.  The past seven years he’s been serving as hitting coach for the Detroit Tigers, including the mentoring of Miguel Cabrera becoming the first Triple Crown winner in several decades.  The Tigers just named Brad Ausmus as manager, so it’s not surprising the McClendon might seek other opportunities as Ausmus may want to build a staff of those he is more familiar with.  McClendon was a leading candidate for the Tigers job replacing veteran Jim Leyland, especially given his previous managerial experience.  But ultimately the Motor City Kitties went another direction.

He becomes the 19th manager in franchise history, only Lou Piniella managed to stick around more than four seasons or make the playoffs.

David Whitlock - manager

David (a.k.a. Longhorndave or lhd_on_sports) joined the staff late in the 2012 season and moved to Site Manager in early 2013. A lifelong Houston Astros fan (and mini-season ticket holder for 9 years) he attends 20+ games per year. A statistics freak, David still keeps score the "old fashioned way" on occasion (and has kept manual score of World Series games since 1986 and retains the sheets). He was a featured guest weekly on the Phil Naessens Show. He is also a Texas Longhorns alumnus and huge football and baseball fan of his alma mater. When he isn't watching or writing about baseball, he works as a contractor at NASA Johnson Space Center. He lives by the mantra "a bad day at the ballpark is better than a good day anywhere else."
