Manny Machado to have knee surgery; likely done for season
Manny Machado of the Baltimore Orioles is the latest impact player on a contending team to be lost for the season with an injury. According to Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports, Machado will undergo season-ending right knee surgery.
Machado suffered the injury in an Aug. 11 game against the New York Yankees in Baltimore. Machado hit a grounder to shortstop Derek Jeter and appeared to just collapse in the batter’s box on the follow through. It wasn’t clear how, but he just couldn’t get up.
Machado suffered an injury to his left knee in 2013 that ended his season, and apparently this injury has a similar abnormality.
It’s a deflating blow for the Orioles, who were 73-53 and 21-9 in their last 30 games. The Orioles will still likely win the American League East because they are 8 1/2 games ahead of the New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays, but they could miss Machado in the playoffs.
Machado is one of the best defensive third basemen in baseball. He’s fifth in the AL in Total Zone Runs and second in range factor. He complimented that with a .278 batting and 12 home runs in 82 games.
