Mariano Rivera still plans to shag fly balls

  • David Whitlock

Undeterred by what was by far the worst injury of his sure Hall of Fame career, Mariano Rivera pledged that his desire to shag BP fly balls (with an ultimate goal of playing outfield in a spot one inning) will not change.  Rivera suffered a gruesome and completely unnecessary injury in early 2012 when he awkwardly stumbled across the warning track and wall.

However, Mo doesn’t want to change his habits, even at the age of 43 and having accumulated more saves than any other human being.  According to Mark Feinsand, Yankees beat writter for the New York Daily News:

At the link therein, Rivera is quoted as saying:

“I don’t want to change. I will do whatever it takes ot be myself again. I don’t want to be someone that I’m not. I have to be careful? Yeah. I’m always careful. The injury happened because the Lord permitted it. I have to be ready, and if shagging is part of my routine, then I’ll be doing it. How much? I don’t know, but I’ll be doing it.”

I say, if you’ve done all the things Rivera has done, you should be able to do what you want.  Joe Girardi, take note (Girardi may have other ideas on Mo’s plans).  In fact, all of us might learn a lesson about “getting back on the horse” after some sort of mishap in our lives and not letting one fluke keep us from enjoying life!

A lifelong Houston Astros fan (and mini-season ticket holder for 9 years) he attends 20+ games per year. A statistics freak, David still keeps score the "old fashioned way" on occasion (and has kept manual score of World Series games since 1986 and retains the sheets). He was a featured guest weekly on the Phil Naessens Show. He is also a Texas Longhorns alumnus and huge football and baseball fan of his alma mater. When he isn't watching or writing about baseball, he works as a contractor at NASA Johnson Space Center. He lives by the mantra "a bad day at the ballpark is better than a good day anywhere else."
