Mark Appel Selected #1 by Houston Astros
After losing 107 games in 2012, the Houston Astros were award the 1st pick of this year’s First-Year Player Draft. Today, June 6th, they used that 1st overall pick to add Mark Appel, a right-handed pitcher from Stanford.
Mark Appel is a Houston native who turned down $4 million from the Pittsburgh Pirates after being selected #8 overall. He returned to Stanford where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree while tallying a 10-4 record and a 2.12 ERA on the field.
Harold Reynolds got a little crazy and said he wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the majors as early as this July… That’s next month! Harold Reynolds is crazy, but nonetheless, there is a lot of reason for optimism around Mark Appel.
