Marlins to Sign Jarrod Saltalamacchia

The Miami Marlins have made a free agency splash this evening by signing Jarrod Saltalamacchia to three-year $21MM contract. The signing was first reported via twitter.

Salty was linked to several teams during the offseason, including the Texas Rangers and the Minnesota Twins. The switch-hitting Saltalamacchia hit.273/.338/.466 with 14 homers last season.  Salty has a few drawbacks, including the fact that he is prone to striking out and is pretty bad at hitting lefties.

Defensively he isn’t the greatest, he threw out 21.2% of potential base stealers last season, a mark that put him second to last in the league.  According to most sources, the Red Sox would have liked to bring him back, but would not go beyond a two year deal for a catcher.

A former first round pick by the Atlanta Braves, he went over to the Rangers in the much vaunted Mark Texiera deal that netted the Rangers one of the best prospect hauls of all-time.  Salty never quite lived up to his potential as a prospect, but has been a decent starting backstop, compiling a 6.2 WAR over seven seasons in the majors.  He was instrumental in the Boston Red Sox 2013 season and Postseason run.
