Miguel Cabrera hits his 40th home run, ties Dimaggio on all-time list

  • David Whitlock

The day after he capped a Detroit Tigers victory with a walk-off home run (his 39th), 3B Miguel Cabrera continued his assault on a second-straight Triple Crown, blasting his 40th home run on Sunday afternoon against the Kansas City Royals.  Watch the no-doubter (courtesy of MLB.com):

It was Cabrera’s 361 career long ball, tying Joe Dimaggio on the all-time list.  Mr. Coffee never had a triple crown, though, and Cabrera (.360) currently leads the AL batting title race by 30 points over Los Angeles Angels OF Mike Trout, and the AL RBI race (120) by 9 over Baltimore Orioles Chris Davis.  Davis still holds on to a tenuous 5 home run lead with 45 (also with a HR on Sunday), although the lead seems to be shrinking by the day.  And we still have over a full month left!  Just another race to watch in September!

David Whitlock - manager

David (a.k.a. Longhorndave or lhd_on_sports) joined the staff late in the 2012 season and moved to Site Manager in early 2013. A lifelong Houston Astros fan (and mini-season ticket holder for 9 years) he attends 20+ games per year. A statistics freak, David still keeps score the "old fashioned way" on occasion (and has kept manual score of World Series games since 1986 and retains the sheets). He was a featured guest weekly on the Phil Naessens Show. He is also a Texas Longhorns alumnus and huge football and baseball fan of his alma mater. When he isn't watching or writing about baseball, he works as a contractor at NASA Johnson Space Center. He lives by the mantra "a bad day at the ballpark is better than a good day anywhere else."
