New York Mets ace Matt Harvey elects for Tommy John surgery

After much speculation that perhaps New York Mets phenom pitcher Matt Harvey could rehab his elbow without surgery, Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson disclosed today that his ace pitcher will be headed for the knife.  According to ESPNNewYork.com Adam Rubin, Harvey came to the conclusion himself:

“Based on the conversations that I had with both of the doctors, I felt this would be the right decision,” Alderson said. “So in that sense I’m happy Matt has reached the same conclusion.”

The surgery on Harvey’s partially torn ulnar collateral ligament would sideline him for the entire 2014 season.  A season in which the team is not expected to be favored to compete for the division, so, again, prudence is wise.  Harvey was nearing a rehab regimen that would have started throwing soon, so the decision was timely.

Harvey had a banner 2013 season, finishing at 9-5 in 26 starts, with a 2.27 ERA, good for 3rd in the National League behind 2011 Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw and likely rookie of the year, Jose Fernandez.  Harvey also had the opportunity to start the All-Star Game at the Mets home, Citi Field.

Best wishes for a fast recovery and here’s hoping Harvey comes back stronger than ever after the surgery.
