The Houston Astros are hoping for “like father, like son”.  According to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com, Reid Ryan, son of 300 game winner, all time strikeout king, and Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan has been selected to be the next president of the struggling Houston Astros franchise.  Press conference scheduled for Friday at 1:00 CDT.  While Nolan Ryan’s tenure in the Texas Rangers front office has led to two World Series appearances, the Astros might be poised (with prospects and draft picks acquired) in the near future as well.  Before you surmise that Reid is primarily being selected based upon name, it’s worth pointing out his extraordinary success as president of a venture that runs both the AAA Round Rock Express (Rangers) and AA Corpus Christi Hooks (Astros).  Both teams consistently lead the Pacific Coast and Texas Leagues in attendance, with beautiful new ballparks and an engaged fan base.

As Nolan Ryan remains the president of the Texas Rangers after some tumultuous times this spring, a natural AL West rivalry is born.  Speculation remains that, after some tough times, Nolan could join his son in a number of capacities as he might want to reduce his active duty as he enters an age at which he might want to slow down.  Also, the Round Rock Express could reshuffle affiliation back to the Houston Astros (for which they were from 2005 – 2010).

George Postolos recently resigned as Houston Astros president after a tumultuous reign during a period of rebuilding and controversial shift in local TV coverage to a local regional network that still keeps 60% of the Houston TV market without coverage of the team (questionable whether fans really notice).
