Phillies GM insults Philadelphia fans; is he done?
Things are pretty far from sunny in Philadelphia. While the Philadelphia Phillies are not in last place, they do have the worst run differential in all of Major League Baseball (-56 through Tuesday May 26). Fans in the City of Brotherly Love, never known for their patience or decorum, want answers from their front office in terms of rebuilding plans. And general manager Ruben Amaro gave them answers. In the form of an insult. When asked if he should indulge fans by promoting some of their top prospects, he told them what he thought about their game education (via ESPN.com)
“They don’t understand the game. They don’t understand the process. There’s a process. And then they bitch and complain because we don’t have a plan. There’s a plan in place and we’re sticking with the plan. We can’t do what’s best for the fan. We have to do what’s best for the organization so the fan can reap the benefit of it later on. That’s the truth.”
Really? Not doing what’s best for the fan? They are the ultimate fund source of all this. And what is this so called plan? Keeping Cole Hamels on a team that’s sinking faster than the price of oil? Holding on to Ryan Howard and Chase Utley who are somewhere between aging and disinterested. There are few prospects in the system (several were dealt to the Houston Astros, including Domingo Santana which was reportedly a clerical error).
Amaro later “clarified” his statements about the fans to try and soften the point of the spear, but the damage was already done. His contract is up after this year. I’m from the future. He won’t be in this position next year. He didn’t understand the process, game, or his fans.
