PHOTO: Chris Sale pranks teammate with phone number on hat during interview

Everyone loves a baseball clubhouse prankster.  With hours of time on their hands before and after games, you have to keep an eye on them.  That’s where Chicago White Sox reliever Scott Carroll failed, didn’t keep an eye out.  Except in this case, the publicity may be worth it.  Fellow Sox hurler Chris Sale obliged Carroll’s request to wear a new “customizable” hat.  Except that he customized it with Carroll’s phone number.

The backstory is best explained by Scott Merkin of MLB.com:

Carroll joined with his friend, Ryan McClellend, in a product called Doodlehats.com. The hats feature dry-erase material on the front so the owner can change messages from day to day or hour to hour. Carroll gave out those hats, which go for around $20, to his teammates and Sale wore it after his victorious start over the Giants.

And Carroll didn’t seem to sore over the tables being turned (via Merkin):

“When I came out of the shower, I saw he was wearing the hat. And I was like, ‘That’s cool. He’s wearing it. I’m happy someone is finally wearing it for an interview,'” a smiling Carroll said Thursday. “I get closer and I see my number on there and I was like, ‘Son of a … .’

“It was really funny. I thought it was awesome. I thought it was a great prank. That’s why I was joking and said you try to do something nice for a guy and that’s how they repay you.”

David (a.k.a. Longhorndave or lhd_on_sports) joined the staff late in the 2012 season and moved to Site Manager in early 2013. A lifelong Houston Astros fan (and mini-season ticket holder for 9 years) he attends 20+ games per year. A statistics freak, David still keeps score the "old fashioned way" on occasion (and has kept manual score of World Series games since 1986 and retains the sheets). He was a featured guest weekly on the Phil Naessens Show. He is also a Texas Longhorns alumnus and huge football and baseball fan of his alma mater. When he isn't watching or writing about baseball, he works as a contractor at NASA Johnson Space Center. He lives by the mantra "a bad day at the ballpark is better than a good day anywhere else."
