The Boston Red Sox must either be very high on their pitching prospects or really think that a few bats will be what turns them around. They’ve traded away the men who started their first four games of the season within a matter if weeks (Lester, Lackey, Doubront and Peavy).

According to Jon Heyman of CBS sports, the Red Sox are sending John Lackey to the St. Louis Cardinals for a Major League ready outfielder and pitcher. According to ESPN Boston’s Gordon Edes, that pitcher is right-hander Joe Kelly and the outfielder is Allen Craig.

Lackey had a record of 11-7 with a 3.60 ERA and 116 strikeouts with the Red Sox this season.

Allen Craig hit .237 with 7 home runs and 44 runs batted in with the Cardinals this season.

Joe Kelly was 2-2 with a 4.37 ERA and 25 strikeouts in his seven appearances with the Cardinals in 2014.

Derek Goold, Cardinals beat reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says that the Cardinals are all stunned by this trade, especially those players involved.

MLB.com reports that neither team has confirmed nor commented on this trade.
