REPORT: San Diego Padres land Justin Upton in trade of prospects to Braves

  • David Whitlock

The San Diego Padres are on an outfield trading spree, having landed Matt Kemp from the Los Angeles Dodgers (we think), Wil Myers from the Tampa Bay Rays (we know) and now Justin Upton from the Atlanta Braves (according to sources).  Ken Rosenthal reports that the Padres have agree to trade prospects to land the slugging outfielder from Atlanta:

Rosenthal goes on to add a list of prospects likely in the deal:

Some background on those guys (all are 22 years old)
Hunter Renfroe, OF, 27 HR in 672 minor league AB (AA at end of 2014)
Matt Wisler, SP RHP, 25-15 record in minors (AAA at end of 2014)
Austin Hedges, C, 21 HR in 1090 AB (AA at end of 2014)

Jim Bowden of ESPN reports that Max Fried is one of the prospects headed to the Peach State

Max Fried, 20 years old, SP LHP, 6-9 record in minors (A at end of 2014)

Later, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports clarified the prospect list, noting none of the players Rosenthal speculated were in the deal

Jace Peterson, IF, 24 years old, .287 minor league average, played 27 games for Padres in 2014.
Dustin Peterson, IF, 20 years old, 684 MiLB AB, only as high as A ball last year
Mallex Smith, OF, 21 years old, .290 average, 169 SB career MiLB, finished 2014 in High-A

The youth movement in Atlanta is afoot, as they add young talent in exchange for the power-hitting, but strikeout prone Justin Upton who can be an MVP when hot, or barely playable when in a slump.  The dealing of Justin Upton also breaks up the brother combination of he and B.J. Upton.  B.J. likewise has been strikeout prone but without the streaks of glory.  The Braves have traded away Jason Heyward and Justin Upton, so their outfield will look completely new in 2015.
