Scott Rolen may return to Reds

  • David Whitlock

As the Cincinnati Reds put the finishing touches on what they hope is a pennant-winning roster, there’s a “chance” that 2011 All Star Scott Rolen may be on it.  According to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer:

Cincinnati Reds GM Walt Jocketty is quoted as saying

“I think there’s a chance we get something worked out…we’re talking about the details — how much opportunity is there.”

As noted in the full article, Rolen would be a bench player, which is probably fitting since his body would be unlikely to hold up to more than 140 games (he’s played fewer than 100 in each of the past two years).  But Rolen has played in five postseasons, including two with the Cincinnati Reds, 39 games total, and one championship (Cardinals 2006).  He would have a great deal of clubhouse value in terms of leadership, work ethic, and defense, for which he boasts of eight Gold Gloves.  The Dodgers are also lurking in the palm trees to likewise shore up what they hope is a roster to take them deep into the post-season.  Rolen turns 38 during the first week of the 2013 season.
