St. Louis Cardinals may activate 1B Allen Craig for World Series

After their dominating performance in Game Six of the National League Championship Series, the 2013 National League Champion St. Louis Cardinals can start making plans to travel to Detroit or Boston for World Series Game 1 on Wednesday.  The biggest  decision they have to make is whether to activate All-Star 1B Allen Craig, who has been sidelined since September 4 with a foot injury.  According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Craig went through 10 simulated at bats on Friday and went well:

Craig faced Jake Westbrook, Sam Freeman and rehabbing lefty Jaime Garcia.  “It didn’t look like he really missed much (time), to be honest,” manager Mike Matheny said.  “If it’s up to me, I’ll be there” for the World Series, Craig said. “I’m ready. I feel I can help.”

Despite only playing in 134 games, Craig led the Red Birds with 97 RBI (good for 8th in the National League).  With the Designated Hitter being in play for the series, the extra power bat would be welcome and would then keep him off the balky foot for most of the evening.

Craig has made less than $2.5M in replacing Albert Pujols at 1B since the former Cardinal bolted for the Los Angeles Angels for $28M over the past two years.  Craig has more RBI (189 to 169) and hitting for better average (.311 to .275).  Is it any wonder the Cardinals are playing deep into October for the second straight year while the Angels are playing golf?
