WATCH: Tampa Bay Rays pull off hidden ball trick on Dodgers

  • David Whitlock

The Tampa Bay Rays pulled off a heads up play that is normally seen around little league fields, not big league ones like Dodger Stadium.  But on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly after all runners tagged up, the Rays infielders (started by former Dodger James Loney) managed to move the ball rather overtly around the infield without the Dodgers seeing it, then catching Dodger Juan Uribe with a foot off the bag.  Umpire Angel Hernandez (never one to not be in the middle of an interesting call), casually pumped out Uribe on the tag.  Watch it all unfold (via Youtube/domcirello & MLB on Fox)

This is probably a failure of the base coaches and even the Dodgers bench more than the runner.  There’s gotta be 25 guys yelling “Third base has ball! Third base has ball!” when it was tossed over there.  The runner can also as for time out at the end of a play to dust off, perhaps that should have been invoked.

David Whitlock - manager

David (a.k.a. Longhorndave or lhd_on_sports) joined the staff late in the 2012 season and moved to Site Manager in early 2013. A lifelong Houston Astros fan (and mini-season ticket holder for 9 years) he attends 20+ games per year. A statistics freak, David still keeps score the "old fashioned way" on occasion (and has kept manual score of World Series games since 1986 and retains the sheets). He was a featured guest weekly on the Phil Naessens Show. He is also a Texas Longhorns alumnus and huge football and baseball fan of his alma mater. When he isn't watching or writing about baseball, he works as a contractor at NASA Johnson Space Center. He lives by the mantra "a bad day at the ballpark is better than a good day anywhere else."
