Joe Torre says instant replay on hold until 2014

  • David Whitlock

Joe Torre, the Major League Baseball’s executive vice president of baseball operations, has told the Los Angeles Times Bill Shaikin that instant replay changes are on ice for 2013, but “there will be something, for sure” in 2014.

As part of the article, Torre added:

“It’s not like we’re afraid to do something. I don’t want to do something unless we feel like it’s the right thing to do.  Let’s do it the right way and have a formula that will work, without making the game stand still”

Replay could not overturn this “safe” call in the 2012 ALCS

After a number of blown calls in the 2012 postseason (in what seems like an October tradition), smart money seemed to be on changes on the “lowest lying fruit” (like fair/foul down the lines, trap plays, tag/no tag) would be a no-brainer and wouldn’t require extensive implementation protocol.  But Major League Baseball doesn’t seem ready just yet.

Bud Selig has yet to officially kill changes for 2013, but the handwriting appears to be on the wall.

While MLB appears to trail most of the other major sports in replay, I do appreciate the careful nature of the decision, and avoiding knee-jerk reactions.

David Whitlock - manager

David (a.k.a. Longhorndave or lhd_on_sports) joined the staff late in the 2012 season and moved to Site Manager in early 2013. A lifelong Houston Astros fan (and mini-season ticket holder for 9 years) he attends 20+ games per year. A statistics freak, David still keeps score the "old fashioned way" on occasion (and has kept manual score of World Series games since 1986 and retains the sheets). He was a featured guest weekly on the Phil Naessens Show. He is also a Texas Longhorns alumnus and huge football and baseball fan of his alma mater. When he isn't watching or writing about baseball, he works as a contractor at NASA Johnson Space Center. He lives by the mantra "a bad day at the ballpark is better than a good day anywhere else."

  • I am not saying they shouldn’t have replay in MLB, but I hope if they do it they can make the calls quicker than they do in the NFL…Otherwise it will add a boat load of time to the games…

I agree with you, I strongly fear that replay could slow down an already pretty slow game. Need to have limited use with an arbiter already looking at tape so that by the time the manager calls for it, the answer has already been reached.
