Q: Who are current or former pitchers for the Sugarland Skeeters, Alex.

It’s official, Tracy McGrady is a two-sport professional athlete.  The Sugarland Skeeters (Atlantic League, Independent) announced today that seven-time NBA All-Star and two-time NBA scoring champion Tracy McGrady has made their team as a pitcher.  The Sugarland Skeeters issued a press release announcing the move:

The Sugar Land Skeeters of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball announced today that the club has signed right-handed pitcher and seven-time National Basketball Association All-Star Tracy McGrady to its 2014 roster.

“It’s an honor to be a part of this club for the 2014 season,” said McGrady. “To be a part of the team means everything to me and it’s a dream come true. I look forward to coming to the ballpark not only to play the game but to be in the clubhouse building camaraderie with these guys. I am excited to start the journey we’re going to take this season.”

“We are excited about our team this season and having Tracy McGrady as a part of it,” said Skeeters Manager Gary Gaetti. “We’re also excited to see what unique opportunities this could present for us in putting a good product on the field and we look forward to Tracy helping us win some ball games.”

Sugarland is a populous suburb of Houston, where McGrady played for the Rockets for just over five seasons.  One would have to surmise having Houston ties and a need to sell tickets might influence the final roster decision.  Either way, it will be interesting the first time he gets to the mound.  The 6’8″ right-hander has been clocked around 90 MPH and might be figuring out a knuckleball.  In one exhibition appearance against a local community college, McGrady went an inning with a run and three hits.

The Skeeters feature other notables such as former major league players Gary Majewski (who was on the Team USA for the  2006 World Baseball Classic) and Nick Stavinoha.  Also on the team is Roger Clemens son Koby, former high round draft picks Delwyn Young and Ryan Langerhans.

The Skeeters open their season at home on Thursday against the Lancaster Barnstormers.

David (a.k.a. Longhorndave or lhd_on_sports) joined the staff late in the 2012 season and moved to Site Manager in early 2013. A lifelong Houston Astros fan (and mini-season ticket holder for 9 years) he attends 20+ games per year. A statistics freak, David still keeps score the "old fashioned way" on occasion (and has kept manual score of World Series games since 1986 and retains the sheets). He was a featured guest weekly on the Phil Naessens Show. He is also a Texas Longhorns alumnus and huge football and baseball fan of his alma mater. When he isn't watching or writing about baseball, he works as a contractor at NASA Johnson Space Center. He lives by the mantra "a bad day at the ballpark is better than a good day anywhere else."
