WATCH: Brandon Belt almost decapitated by screwball
Three throws and a run scores. Henderson Alvarez’ animated windup was the least entertaining feature here.
The Miami Marlins’ starter threw some high cheese that got by catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia. San Francisco Giants’ first baseman Brandon Belt took off from second base. In a whirling dervish, Saltalamacchia fired a throw wide right of third that almost conked Belt in the face. Belt scored on an errant throw from left fielder Christian Yelich. (via YouTube)
The official ruling was a passed ball and a throwing error was charged to Saltalamacchia. It was Saltalamacchia’s third passed ball and 11th error.
The Marlins took an early lead on an RBI single by third baseman Casey McGehee, which scored Yelich in the first inning. Belt tied the game with the double and the Giants took the lead on the error. Alvarez left the game in the third inning with a left shin contusion. When you’re on a six-game losing streak like the Marlins, these things tend to happen. The Marlins recovered Sunday to win 3-2, but are 11-19 in their last 30 games.
