WATCH: Clayton Kershaw Gets a Birthday Kangaroo
Today is Dodgers’ ace Clayton Kershaw’s 26th birthday. Kershaw, along with the rest of the Los Angeles Dodgers, is in Australia to open up Major League Baseball’s regular season with a two game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks at the Sydney Cricket Grounds.
The series is set up to raise awareness overseas for the sport of baseball. It also commemorates the 100th anniversary of the last exhibition game played at the Sydney Cricket Grounds by the New York (baseball) Giants and the Chicago Cubs.
Kershaw’s wife Ellen found an interesting way to celebrate her husband’s birthday and take advantage of their present whereabouts when she set up a surprise meeting for Clayton with a joey, or baby kangaroo today.
The reigning National League Cy Young Award winner was able to hold and feed the joey on a park bench. Check out the encounter here:
Kershaw is slated to be the opening day starter for the Dodgers on Saturday, March 22, 2014. He looks to build on his excellent 2013 campaign (16-9 record, 1.83 ERA, 3 CG, 2 SO, and 232K) and earn some of that seven year, $215 million dollar contract that he signed this offseason. He also hopes that the Dodgers can get back to the Postseason and avenge their loss to the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2013 NLCS.
If you want to watch Kershaw pitch Saturday, make sure you set an alarm, because with the 15 hour time difference between the US’ east coast and Sydney, first pitch will be around 4:00 AM EDT. Sunday’s game will be a little more manageable with an approximate 10:00PM EDT first pitch.
If you’re unable to stay up or get up early for the games, fret not, Reading Between the Seams will have recaps for the Australia games when you when you wake up.
Three days until the games count people!
