WATCH: Jose Molina beats out infield single
Coming into his start against the Tampa Bay Rays, Sonny Gray was 5-1 with a 1.18 ERA in his last six starts. Gray had five straight wins in July and in a 1-0 loss to the Kansas City Royals, he went seven innings allowing three hits, one run and striking out seven. But against the Rays, Gray went 4 1/3 innings allowing seven runs and 10 hits in Oakland’s 7-3 loss. But in this case, you can’t really blame Gray because baseball is the craziest game in the world. Jose Molina of all people beat out this infield hit (YouTube.com).
For people in the Bay Area who may have felt earthquake-like phenomena, it was just Molina running to first base. Gray would serve up a two-run homer to Kevin Kiermaier on the next at bat. Molina may have still been trying to catch his breath because Kiermaier almost passed him on his home run trot. But Gray has been so good that his ERA rose to 2.87 from 2.59.
But add Molina beating out an infield to the list of worst ways to lose a baseball game.
