WATCH: Pirates’ Cheese Chester lands on DL
Last night, the Pittsburgh Pirates announced that one of their beloved racing pierogies, Cheese Chester has landed on the disabled list with a broken foot. He looks to be out for six to eight weeks.

The pierogies race during the seventh inning stretch of every Pittsburgh home game. I’ve personally never seen Cheese Chester lose a race in person during my dozens of Pirates games.
It’s really a shame. Cheese Chester had the race won before he tumbled to the ground pointing to his foot. This footage may not be good for cheese lovers, but check it out:
The Pirates have called Potato Pete out of retirement to take Cheese Chester’s spot in the lineup. When the Pirates host the Miami Marlins on August 5th at PNC Park, it will mark the first time that Potato Pete has raced since 2001.
Cheese Chester is hoping to be back at the early end of the 6-8 week estimate so he can get a few good races in before the Pirates’ hopeful playoff run.
The Buccos, as the Pirates are known around Western Pennsylvania, are currently 54-47, sitting 2.5 games out of first place in the National League Central Division and just half a game out of the National League’s second Wild Card.
It’s a good thing that those doctors were at the game in their scrubs with ther stethoscopes! It’s actually seems almost too convenient that they were able to react so quickly. I wonder if this was a marketing ploy by Mrs. T’s and the Pirates? In any case, I wish Cheese Chester a quick recovery. He’s always been my favorite Pierogi – both in the races and in the frozen food section.
