WATCH: Travis Wood the slugging pitcher
The Chicago Cubs beat the rival St. Louis Cardinals 7-6 in the first of a three-game series at Wrigley Field. Cubs’ starting pitcher Travis Wood helped the cause this time by hitting his third home run in the fourth inning to give the Cubs a 5-3 lead. (mlb.com)
Yet true to form of his disappointing season, Wood surrendered two home runs the very next inning. Matt Carpenter and Matt Holliday both hit solo shots in the Wrigley wind. Wood lasted only five innings and cost himself a win he could’ve used.
Wood has been a typical middle-of-the-rotation pitcher and made the National League All-Star team last season. But this season, Wood is 7-9 with a 5.06 ERA. Fortunately his hitting hasn’t been lacking. With his third home run, Wood’s slugging percentage .538. If he keeps hitting like this and continues to struggle pitching, the Cubs could put him in the lineup.
