Yankees Tell Reggie Jackson to Stay Away from Team
Reggie Jackson, the man known to be the “straw that stirs the drink,” has stirred up some ill feelings within the New York Yankees organization. Last week, Reggie Jackson had some negative things to say about some of the Yankees members. The most notable member of the Yankees that Jackson made disparaging comments about is Alex Rodriguez. Now, according to ESPN, the New York Yankees have told Jackson, also known as “Mr. October,” to stay away from the team. Reggie is currently a special advisor to the Yankees and is usually around the team on a regular basis. In the last few days, he hasn’t been seen around.
Jackson’s comments were published in last weeks Sports Illustrated issue. Among his comments, Jackson was asked about Alex Rodriguez and the connection with steroids and performance enhancing drugs (PEDs). Mr. October openly expressed his displeasure with being passed on the home run list by a number of players, including A-Rod, suspected or proven to be involved in PED usage. As to A-Rod, Jackson said:
Al’s a very good friend, But I think there are real questions about his numbers. As much as I like him, what he admitted about his usage does cloud some of his records.
Any subject regarding PEDs and current players is going to be a very sensitive topic. When it comes to speaking negatively about players directly connected to the same organization that the speaker is connected to, there is sure to be a controversy that follows. The Yankees are doing the best they can to minimize such a controversy.
Jackson has contacted Yankees officials, manager Joe Girardi and Alex Rodriguez to apologize. A-Rod has confirmed having contact. While A-Rod and the organization are not saying much about the situation, Rodriguez did have the following comments regarding Jackson’s comments and his friendship, “We’re going to keep that very private… With friends like that, who needs enemies.“
Reggie has long been the straw that stirs the drink…Now, he may want to let that glass settle and sip slowly. The Yankees have put Mr. October in “time out” and want this matter handled internally.
