Derrick Rose has become somewhat of a running joke in the NBA after nearly two full seasons recovering from knee injuries.  The joke usually starts with a reference to something old or slow and ends with ‘will return before Derrick Rose’.

Well according to Chicago Bulls beat writer KC Johnson, the return could be as soon as tomorrow if the new NBA season started then.  In fact, Rose is due to play for Team USA in the World Cup that runs between the end of August to early September in Spain.

As previously reported, Rose began taking full contact in the form of one-on-one or two-on-two or three-on-three offday sessions late in the first-round series against the Wizards. Rose has had no setbacks and, if the season started tomorrow, would be fine to play. He remains on schedule to participate in the Team USA minicamp in Las Vegas at the end of July and hopes to make the World Cup team that will compete in Spain in late August through early September.

There’s not been a great deal of talk about Rose’s rehabilitation from his second knee injury, perhaps because so much fuss was made about his return from his first one.  Rose originally tore his ACL in Game 1 of the 2011-12 NBA Playoffs against the Philadelphia 76ers.  He would not play again until the start of the 2013-14 season.

After much hype surrounding his return and how he was a better player, Rose re-injured the same knee early in the 2013-14 season and it was back to the treatment table.  Rose also didn’t do himself any favors by sitting out of Bulls games when he’d been cleared to play by doctors months before.

It’s great news for Bulls fans if Rose truly is close to a return.  They want to see their start player return and frankly, I think everyone is sick of hearing the old ‘returns before Derrick Rose’ gag.  Rose has had some bad luck over the last two years but he’s still one of the best players in the NBA when healthy.
