Report: Dwight Howard intrigued by Rockets, Mavericks

  • Andy Flint

It looks like the Dwightmare may continue into this Summer, as the free agent readies to hit the open market, where suitors are likely to swarm from every angle. Two teams linked to have interest in Howard this off season are the Houston Rockets and the Dallas Mavericks. One is an aging club with an owner willing to “open the bank” in order to taste another championship, and the other is an intriguing young squad, carried by the young and versatile, James Harden.

Both teams have reportedly expressed interest in the services of  the leagues former defensive player of the year, and reports would also indicate that Howard has interest in hearing them out. The 27-year old, former Magic superstar has acted as if he’s loyal to LA, but we all know that Howard’s word has become a bit less reliable in recent years. Dwight Howard’s loyalty will always be in question, and believe me when I say that nobody inside the Lakers’ front office will rest easy until Howard’s ink drys on the dotted line.

After the display Howard put on in the Sunshine State a couple of seasons ago, the reality that he may do the same thing in Hollywood after an incredibly unsuccessful season, and numerous reports that he and Lakers’ mega star, Kobe Bryant, don’t really get along, seems as real as ever.

This report from Ken Berger of CBS Sports:

With six weeks to go before Howard becomes an unrestricted free agent, the team that is said to intrigue him the most is the Houston Rockets, according to multiple people briefed on internal conversations surrounding Howard’s free-agent decision. The Rockets have a young star, James Harden, who has proved himself worthy of playing the leading role for the franchise; a budding 3-point shooting threat in Chandler Parsons; a defensive-minded coach in Kevin McHale; and Omer Asik, the kind of 7-footer Howard is believed to want next to him in the frontcourt.

There’s no denying that Howard’s time in Los Angeles has been rough, and that Houston’s media is a bit more player-friendly, and it’s also hard to not get excited over a combination of James Harden and Dwight Howard, but the reality of the situation is that nobody really knows what Dwight has in store for us this Summer. My suggestion is to sit back and watch as the drama unfolds.
