The Desert Diamond Cup, a preseason tournament for MLS teams, continued late last night with a match between two teams that seemed destined to be rivals from the start: the New England Revolution and the New York Red Bulls. The tournament, which is held in Tucson, AZ, features four MLS teams. This year’s edition, the 2nd annual tournament, also features David Beckham and the Los Angeles Galaxy, as well as Real Salt Lake.
The Revolution, already surprise winners in their first match of the tournament over the Galaxy, continued their winning ways with a clean sheet victory over the Red Bulls, 2-0. Midfielder Kelyn Rowe scored both goals for the Revs, showing why he’s a player in the running for a roster spot on the U.S. National team heading into the London Olympic Games.
The win puts the Revolution in first place with 6 points heading into the final opening round match against Real Salt Lake on February 29th. Even with a loss there, they are still likely to advance to the finals March 3rd against either the Galaxy or Real Salt Lake. This would give the Revolution the opportunity to enter the regular season with a wave of momentum, especially if they defeat the defending MLS Cup Champions in the Galaxy to take the Desert Diamond Cup.
