Fabio Moldonado replaces Junior Dos Santos, will meet Stipe Miocic at TUF finale
After Junior Dos Santos suffered an injury to his left thumb that forced him to withdraw from his fight with Stipe Miocic at the “Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 3″ Finale on May 31st, his replacement has been announced by UFC officials via social media.
Stipe Miocic will now face off with Fabio Moldonado in the main event of the May 31 show, which takes place at Ibirapuera Gymnasium in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Maldonado, 34, has won three straight fights after beginning his UFC career with a 1-4 record. The Brazilian went 2-0 last year and began 2014 with a win on March 23rd over Strikeforce alum Gian Villante at UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs Henderson II.
Miocic has endured defeat just once in 12 professional bouts, a 2012 knockout at the hands of Stefan Struve in his fourth UFC bout. The American rebounded from the knockout loss with back-to-back wins, first outpointing Roy Nelson last June before doing the same to Gabriel Gonzaga this past January at UFC on Fox 10.
Moldonado is taking this fight on very short notice, but it still have the makings of a very good fight. Stipe will have the advantage if he can find the early takedown, but if Moldonado keeps the fight standing up he can certainly outbox Stipe with his past experience as a former professional boxer. Moldonado’s take down defense leaves something to be desired, though, so I believe the outcome of this fight completely depends on if Miocic can secure the take down and control Moldonado with his wrestling.
