Saints fan starts website seeking contract donations for Brees

Very few things have gone right in Saints land this past offseason. It’s been one blow after another for a city that has endured its fair share of tragedy and turmoil. So what does a fan base that has been so reliant on Drew Brees, and what he has brought them do when they see their hero in  contract dispute? Raise money themselves!

Season ticketholder Tony Lemon has started a website called  fansstepup.com which asks Saints fans to make donations in $1, $5 or $100 increments in an effort to keep the perrenial pro bowl quarterback in New Orleans. Thus far the site has $738.09 for Brees. Yeah, I’m thinking that won’t be enough. Lemon, has stated the money will go to the Drew Brees Foundation  if he doesn’t accept the donations personally.

From fanssteup.com:

“Drew Brees has been an incredible ambassador for the City of New Orleans. Not only in his accomplishments on the football field, but in his charitable and community endeavors, he has lifted the spirits of New Orleanians when we were most challenged.”

“In the past few months, we fans have been frustrated to know that Drew Brees may not continue his professional endeavors in New Orleans for reasons completely out of our control. But we can do something about it. We can STEP UP and give Drew a BONUS for all that he has done for New Orleans and this region. We can send a clear message to Drew Brees that we appreciate what he has done for us. We can send a clear message to Drew Brees that we want him to stay here.”

“At the same time, we can let other cities in this country know that we are the best fans anywhere and that we take care of our own. We as fans can become empowered with the creation of this BONUS. We need not sit idly by while a New Orleans treasure is taken away from us.”

Not sure why the Saints brass is playing hardball with someone who has done so much for the city of New Orleans. Hey, Mickey Loomis, hasn’t the Saints fan base endured enough already? Why play hardball with your elite quarterback that has won you a Super Bowl and been an instrumental part of bringing your city back to respectability after the tragic Katrina disaster?

  • That is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard.

  • They are stupid, to not find a defensive mind 4 head coach, & making their fans pay this fee, that should had been paid to Breese already, before it even were an issue, weeks ago. What do they want to completely fall off? Pay the man, make him your offenses head-coach/QB, & heir that defensive mind to run it from the sideline.
That is so ignorant & ridiculous what they are making their fans do, & I feel bad for them. The oil crisis (nobody from the Fed Gov even cares really about them) Katrina, all that stuff, you would think people could be a little bit more considerate of them all?
    :( makes me sad…

  • Mickey Loomis is an idiot and if he is taking orders from the owner Mr Benson to screw with the best player on and off the field in New Orleans football history then let the karma of voodoo bring this organization back to the days of sacks on the heads of fans

  • Save ur money Saints fans, keep in mind that Drew has already turned down 16 million for this upcoming year. Everyone understands how much it means to Drew to get a long term deal but if he is willing to turn down 16 million your token attempt to show how important he is to your city will not sway him. Its not about money, its about ego. Your efforts should be directed toward the owner, Benson by boycotting ticket sales, including his newly aquired NBA team. Picket lines outside the team facilties and maybe even his home. The best way to get even with a rich person is to hit them hard in the wallet. While Drew may think that he deserves Peyton & Brady money keep in mind that Peyton also turned down a long term deal out of respect for the team and organization. With all the off season issues, the team needs Drew more than ever now, he should be the bigger man and take the 16 million and worry about this next year when the team will be whole again.
