Seeking Big Men, Heat Turn To Varnado
The Miami Heat have been getting killed on the NBA odds at times this year because they just don’t have the depth on the inside to be able to rebound with some of the best and biggest teams in the league. As a result, the team has extended 10-day contracts to both C Chris Andersen and F Jarvis Varnado.
Varnado is a particularly interesting case, as he averaged 13.8 points and 10.2 boards per game while with the Mississippi State Bulldogs in his senior season in 2009-10. He only played in the NBA for the first time this year after kicking around the D-League though, first with the Boston Celtics, and now with Miami. In five games with the C’s, Varnado put up six points and three rebounds in just 18 minutes in total. Since joining the Heat back on January 10th, Varnado has scored two points and blocked a pair of shots, and he has only appeared in two of the five games in which he was with the team.
