Browns moving forward with Colt McCoy 99

A few weeks ago, news broke that the St. Louis Rams and the Washington Redskins agreed to terms on a trade that would send the 2nd overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft to the Redskins. Shortly after hearing that, Browns president Mike Holmgren released a statement on the trade saying it was unfair and unjust because of the relationship that the Redskins staff had with the Rams staff, he continued by saying that the offer from the Browns was just the same, if not better to acquire the 2nd overall pick.

While many believe Robert Griffin III is a can’t-miss prospect, the Browns were after him and showed their cards when the opportunity presented itself. After losing out on picking up the higher draft choice, the Browns will move forward with Colt McCoy.

Per a report from Mary Kay Cabot of the Plain Dealer, Browns head coach Pat Shurmer said at this weeks owners meetings that Colt is moving forward as the Browns starter.

“At this point, he’s our quarterback,” said Shurmur. “We’re looking forward to him being our guy and I’m looking forward to seeing him improve. We believe he has a chance to be a fine player in this league.”

Last season, like all NFL teams, there was no full off-season with the training camps and  organized team activities, so expecting a young third round pick to come out playing like the number one overall, was a bit too much to ask.

Some speculate that the Browns will draft another QB in the later part of the draft to compete with the second-most all-time winning QB in NCAA history, but as of now he is the guy. In my opinion, it’s a great decision. The Browns didn’t have much to work with last year. The once-great running back was a joke, and there was no receivers for Colt to get the ball to. He’s a young QB with tons of potential, and if they get the right pieces in place he will see success. You could have put Tom Brady in the same position last year, and he would have wound up with the same record.

Cleveland has a deep draft this year and I expect them to make the most of it. I can see them taking Justin Blackmon with their 4th overall pick, Shurmer had this to say of Blackmon “I’m very impressed with him. I know a lot about him already. He gets in the end zone and he catches the ball in traffic.”

If they opt for the physically-freakish wideout, Colt will have that number one guy that will light it up for him week in and week out.

Those Dawg Pound members have been waiting long enough, and its’ time that their patience pays off for them.
