Derek Anderson agrees to 1-Year contract to remain a Panther 86

Sources say that Unrestricted Free Agent Derek Anderson has agreed to a one year contract to remain with the Carolina Panthers in 2012.

It’s no secret that 2011 Rookie of the Year Cam Newton is going to be starting under center in 2012. He was supported all of last season by Anderson who was signed to a one year contract back in July of 2011. The 7 Year Veteran only took a few snaps in 2011 but has history and success with Rob Chudzinski’s system back when they were both in Cleveland and earned a trip to the Pro Bowl in 2007.  Anderson earned the backup role from the underachieving former 2nd round draft pick Jimmy Clausen. Clausen was inactive for the entire regular season and many are questioning his future in Carolina.

Newton gives a lot of the credit for his spectacular rookie season to Anderson who played the mentor role for the Rookie. When you’re Rookie of the Year Quarterback gives that kind of credit to a guy, it’s definitely a smart move to bring that guy back and that could have played a role in the decision.

Anderson stated that he liked the progress that was being made with Ron Rivera and the rest of the team.

“I’m just excited to get back and build on the success that we had last season,” Anderson said.

Anderson hasn’t revealed the financial details and the Panthers have not made an official announcement yet.
