Tennessee All-SEC linebacker A.J. Johnson arrested along with teammate 66

The Tennessee Volunteers are coming off their best recruiting offseason in years (No. 5 in the nation) which has the program buzzing, but that’s not the only kind of buzzing going on in Knoxville.

Two current players were arrested Sunday: LB AJ Johnson and DT Danny O’Brien, along with former LB Dontavis Sapp.

According to, O’Brien was charged with criminal impersonation (fake ID), resisting arrest and underage consumption. Reports indicate police were called to a loud 80- to 90-person party at an apartment addressed to Sapp and Johnson (they are roommates), and the police returned to the apartment a second time after they heard reports of a fight breaking out around 12:30 AM Sunday.

These  are the first known legal incident since Butch Jones was hired and he has released a statement regarding the situation.

“We are aware of the situation and are still in the preliminary stages of gathering all facts and information,” coach Butch Jones said in a statement. “We have very high standards and expectations within our football program at the University of Tennessee, and appropriate action will be taken.”

Johnson is one of the best defensive players in the SEC and decided to stay in Knoxville for his senior season instead of entering the draft were he would be considered by many to be a first round selection.
