Last night in Glendale, with a largely pro Mexico crowd, the US played a completely different two halves. The first half was dominated by the US, as they scored two goals in 30 minutes. The second half was a completely different story. Mexico came out of half time flying and evened the scoreline quickly; due in large part to a couple of defending mistakes from Omar Gonzalez.

Michael Bradley, who Klinsmann put in the attacking midfield role, flourished. He was all over the pitch, scoring the first goal, and assisting the second. He made fantastic runs off the ball and helped the US win the midfield battle in the first half. His first goal came from a terrific Graham Zusi corner that he slotted home at the back post. Bradley flicked a Tony Beltran cross to the back post on the second goal scored by Chris Wondolowski. Bradley was by far the best player for either side last night.

The US came out in a 4-4-2 diamond formation, something I have been pleading for. I had no idea Bradley would be in Clint Dempsey’s usual role, however. Dempsey played as a true striker alongside Chris Wondolowski, and played a decent game. The real stand out player though is Chris Wondolowski. He scored AGAIN for the US, that makes 9 goals in 11 games. If he is not on the roster for Brazil it could be a huge mistake. He’d be the perfect sub off the bench when the US is pushing for a goal.

Julian Green made his debut last night in the 59th minute. He came on for Brad Davis and also played well. He showed flashes of potential in the attack, even drawing (what should have been) a free kick on the edge of the box. His defending is not at an international level yet, but that will come with experience.

This was a huge game for MLS players to make a final push for Brazil, and I think Michael Parkhurst, Chris Wondolowski, and even DeAndre Yedlin could be surprises on the roster. The 30 man preliminary roster for the World Cup will be announced May 13, with the final 23 man roster being unveiled June 2.
