Brandon Inge: The picture of effort

Brandon Inge and the Oakland A’s are in a playoff race, and efforts shown by Inge on a daily basis are a major factor in why the underdog Athletics are hanging around. As the A’s were in Chicago to take on the White Sox Saturday night, Brandon Inge dislocated his shoulder in the bottom of the seventh inning by making a diving stop on a sharply hit ball down the third base line that held Alex Rios to a single. Inge was not able to get up and make a throw to first due to the injury, but the effort by Inge held Rios to a single on a ball that looked like an easy double. The play likely saved the A’s a run. The White Sox managed three hits in the inning but were only able to score once to take a 7-6 lead.

The vast majority of MLB players would have come out of the game after the dislocation. Instead, Inge popped his shoulder back in place and continued to play. Not only did he continue to play, but Brandon Inge delivered in a huge way. After A’s outfielder Jonny Gomes hit a solo home run to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth, Ingle showed just how tough he is. With runners on first and third and two outs, Brandon Inge stepped to the plate with a separated shoulder. He promptly lined the first pitch to right field for a single that scored Yoenis Cespedes, which proved to be the game-winning run. The A’s and Brandon Inge would win the game by a final score of 9-7.

Brandon Inge may not be the best hitter in the world, but he can never be accused of being a slacker. Entering Sunday, the A’s were tied with the Detroit Tigers for the final wild card spot. The Oakland A’s were hardly thought of as a contender entering this season, but attitudes like Inge’s have propelled them right into the race. According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle,  Oakland A’s manager Bob Melvin has said that Inge is headed back to the Oakland area for an MRI. Let’s hope to see Inge back in uniform real soon.
