Kirk Gibson Doesn’t Like His Dodgers Bobblehead 92

Kirk Gibson bobblehead

As Kirk Gibson and the Arizona Diamondbacks were in Los Angeles to take on the Dodgers Tuesday night, the Dodgers organization decided to give Kirk Gibson a bit of a tribute. Unfortunately, Gibson wasn’t too fond of the idea. Tuesday night was “Kirk Gibson Bobblehead Night” at Dodgers Stadium. Gibson didn’t like the attention.

Kirk Gibson is currently the manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks. What Gibson may be best known for is his ever-so-clutch ninth inning walk-off home run off of Oakland A’s pitcher Dennis Eckersley in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series. Of course, the blast that shocked the baseball world came while Gibson wore a Dodgers uniform. Gibson was notably hurting when he limped to the plate, and when it was all said and done, he had hit one of the most clutch home runs in baseball history. The Dodgers would go on to win the 1988 World Series four games to one, and Kirk Gibson was a Los Angeles hero.  He also won the National League MVP that season.

Gibson is not one who looks to be in the spotlight. Therefore, he didn’t particularly care for the extra attention brought to him with the bobblehead giveaway. As reported by Andrew L. John, of the Los Angeles Times, Kirk Gibson had the following to say regarding Tuesday’s special night:

I think it’s totally ridiculous…It’s not my style, to be honest with you. Yeah, I do have a history here. It was a very cool thing that happened while I was here. I got to experience a world championship with some great teammates.

Gibson may not like the extra attention, but Dodgers fans who remember the 1988 World Series will always cherish what Kirk Gibson brought to the franchise. Gibson was simply one who refused to lose. It’s hard to blame the Dodgers for wanting to honor the man…They haven’t won a World Series since that magical 1988 season.

Here’s a look back at the dramatic events of Game 1 of the 1988 World Series:
